The Department of Meteorology has issued a red alert for strong winds and rough seas, specifically warning multi-day fishing vessels operating in the deep sea areas of the Bay of Bengal.
Issued at 04:30PM. today (23) and valid for the next 24 hours, the warning follows the formation of a new low-pressure area off the Northern Andaman Islands.
According to the department, the system is expected to intensify into a depression within the next 24 hours (by October 24). It is projected to move west-northwestward, further strengthening into a deep depression by October 25 and developing into a cyclonic storm over the west-central Bay of Bengal by the morning of October 26.
Naval and fishing communities operating in the sea area bounded by latitude 10° N to 20° N and longitude 80° E to 95° E are strictly advised to refrain from maritime activities until further notice, while those currently in the affected waters are urged to navigate to safe zones immediately. The public and maritime workers are requested to stay attentive to upcoming forecasts and official advisories issued by the Department of Meteorology. (Newswire)
