Regulate Ayurvedic medicines, beauty products and raw materials – Health Minister

Health and Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa directed the newly appointed members of the Ayurvedic Drug and Product Regulatory Council to take stringent measures to regulate all Ayurvedic medicines, beauty products and raw materials to ensure high-quality and standardised production for consumers.

The Minister issued these directives while participating in the appointment ceremony for the new council members, held at the National Ayurveda Hospital auditorium in Rajagiriya recently. The council, comprising 17 members, convened its first session under the minister’s leadership following the appointment ceremony.

The Ayurvedic Drug and Product Regulatory Council oversees the regulation of various sectors, including domestic Ayurvedic pharmaceutical production, sales, storage, transportation, import and export of Ayurvedic medicines and Ayurvedic cosmetic products. Additionally, the council monitors the cultivation of medicinal plants used in the industry.

Four key committees operate under the council’s full supervision: the Technical Committee on Ayurvedic Drugs, the Committee on Ayurvedic Production and Storage Inspections, the Committee on Ayurvedic Factory and Market Inspections and the Committee on Medicinal Plant Evaluation.

Minister Dr. Jayatissa emphasised that the lack of strict regulation in the Ayurvedic sector has resulted in numerous complaints about product quality. He stressed the importance of ensuring stringent oversight in both Ayurvedic medicine and cosmetic product manufacturing to guarantee consumer safety.

The Minister also highlighted the Government’s goal of integrating traditional medicine with tourism by leveraging Sri Lanka’s unique Ayurvedic specialties. He noted that the administration aims to develop the tourism industry by promoting Ayurvedic wellness tourism, while also accelerating the development of human and physical resources in both Western and Ayurvedic medical institutions within tourist zones.

Ayurveda Commissioner General Dr. Dhammika Abeywickrama, newly appointed council members, Ayurvedic doctors and other officials attended.
