On the occasion of International Women’s Day, Women and Children’s Affairs State Minister Geetha Kumarasinghe noted that a special relief programme will be started to protect and guide women who are burdened with microfinance loans.
The State Minister said this at a press conference held at the Government Information Department to raise awareness on the occasion of International Women’s Day, which falls today (8).
She stated that International Women’s Day is of paramount importance to Sri Lanka since more than half of Sri Lanka’s population are women.
Women’s Day, which started in USA, is celebrated around the world today.
“Since the distant past, the lifestyle of women in our country has flowed in the same way. Don’t underestimate the housewife who does all the work in the house. She is the progress of our country. She discharges all energy doing yeomen service to the family, especially for her children and her husband. All the burdens are taken care of and all the economic issues are dealt with by her,” Kumarasinghe said.
“That’s why the world is curious about the Sri Lankan woman as someone who is very humble and suffers a lot in life,” the State Minister said. Women, Child Affairs Ministry Secretary M. Yamuna Perera and Director of the Sri Lanka Women’s Bureau Champa Upasena also participated in the press conference.
