Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe said in Dambulla on Wednesday (30) that the privileges given to former Presidents should not be revoked. He said that he does not need any privileges and that his privileges should be removed. But the security given to former Presidents Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and Mahinda Rajapaksa should not be removed.
He said that the former President Chandrika Bandaranaike has never supported him but they worked together to support former President Maithripala Sirisena. He made this statement at a meeting organised in Dambulla area by former State Minister Pramitha Bandara Tennakoon. “Chandrika Kumaratunga has never supported me. We have worked together only to support Maithripala Sirisena,”he stressed.
“Mahinda Rajapaksa’s loss of popularity among the public is a different matter. But considering that he ensured the end of the war, his safety should be taken care of,” Wickremesinghe said.
He added that naming Parliament as a den of thieves, taking over the bungalows of former Presidents Mahinda Rajapaksa and Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and withdrawing security are not things that should be done.
“I do not need these benefits. Get rid of my privileges. But it is not appropriate to remove the security and official residences of those leaders”he said.
