Revised rate for rooftop solar panels, renewable energy

Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera said that it was decided to revise the payment system for rooftop solar panels and other renewable energy projects.

The new scheme is applicable only for rooftop solar panels and other renewable energy projects starting from July 1 this year. The method of payment for projects started before July 1 will not change.

Thus, the 20 year fixed tariff for rooftop solar panel project will be Rs.27.06 per unit up to 500 kilowatts and Rs.23.18 per unit for projects above 500 kilowatts. The fixed tariff for 20 years is Rs.25.48 per unit for ground mounted solar panel projects whilst Rs.30.53 per unit for small hydro power plants. Rs.29.86 per unit for wind power projects and Rs.52.77 per unit for biomass power generation projects.

A payment system for renewable energy projects below 10 megawatts, including rooftop solar panels, was implemented from 2022, taking into account the exchange rate, bank interest rate and other economic factors. A spokesperson of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) stated that the tariff system presented in 2022 has been compared with the current economic issues based on the recommendations of the stakeholders, consultants and the charging committee. An official of the Electricity Board said that according to the new system, there will be some reduction in the payments made for renewable energy projects including solar panels starting after July 1.
