Rice import licences lifted till December 20 Measure to mitigate shortages during season

The government’s plan to accept rice imports without import control licences until December 20 has been authorised by the Cabinet of Ministers, Cabinet Spokesman Health and Media Minister Dr.Nalinda Jayathissa said. In light of the current shortages of rice, including Nadu and other rice varieties, in the domestic market as well as the damage to paddy cultivation caused by the recent unfavourable weather conditions, the Cabinet considered the importance of temporarily lifting the current restrictions on the import of rice, the Minister said. The Minister was speaking to the media yesterday at the Government Information Department.

It has been agreed to allow rice imports without the need for import control licences with immediate effect.
