The Millaniya Pradeshiya Sabha has announced plans to develop the road leading to the residence of Sri Lankan javelin throw champion Rumesh Tharanga at an estimated cost of Rs. 8 million.
The announcement was made by the Chairman of the Millaniya Pradeshiya Sabha during its monthly council meeting held on Tuesday (13).
During the meeting, Councillor Gayan Sampath proposed naming the road after the athlete as “Javelin Throw Champion Rumesh Tharanga” in recognition of his sporting achievements.
Meanwhile, former Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Sanjeewa Kulathilaka called for the road to be developed to a high standard using asphalt carpeting.
Council members also expressed opposition to the proposal to concrete the road, instead requesting that it be carpeted.
The proposed development is expected to improve access to the athlete’s residence. (Newswire)
