Road to village of Opposition MP Gamini Waleboda to be renovated

Under the project to develop 1,500 kilometres of roads, the development work on the Kottawa Mahawarawa Bakery Road commenced under the patronage of Transport, Highways, and Mass Media Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardhana.

Due to the dilapidated condition of the road, residents have faced numerous difficulties for an extended period. After the situation was brought to the attention of Minister Dr. Gunawardhana by MP Gamini Waleboda, urgent instructions were given to resurface and repair the road.

In his remarks, Minister Dr. Gunawardhana stated, “During the Covid-19 pandemic, the International Monetary Fund provided financial assistance to many countries worldwide. Sri Lanka was also set to receive US$ 700 million. However, we did not receive a single cent. Additionally, US$ 500 million was allocated for road development under a project to develop 10,000 kilometres of roads. Due to shortages of essential items like medicines, fuel, and gas, US$ 310 million was reallocated to import these necessities. Consequently, we were unable to carry out any development projects with the remaining funds, leading to the deterioration of roads across the country and the suspension of many projects.

“The current economic crisis cannot be resolved with political solutions alone; a proper economic solution must be found, requiring collective efforts from all of us. Strikes and protests will not solve the issues. If teachers do not teach, many financially capable individuals will send their children to international or private schools. If there is no trust in the country’s university system, many will pursue education in foreign countries like Singapore, India, and Nepal, leading to a significant outflow of funds from the country. To retain this massive amount of money, we need to establish high-quality higher education institutions in Sri Lanka.

“Recently, a group of professors from Korea had a special discussion with NSBM Green University about implementing courses aligned with the demand for professional jobs in Korea. The aim is to provide education that meets the qualifications required for high-paying jobs in Korea. Currently, many individuals are earning a monthly income of over Rs. 1 million through various online methods connected to the international IT market. This education should also be provided to other youth in the country, and new methodologies should be developed. Without this, the country will not progress. We need everyone’s dedication and contribution to steer the country in a new direction.”

MP Gamini Waleboda, former Provincial Council Member Salochana Gamage, and several public representatives, engineers from the Road Development Authority, government officials, and local residents were present at the event.
