The funeral of former Finance Minister Ronnie De Mel will take place at the Ruhuna University grounds tomorrow (1) at 4.30 p.m. The remains lie at his residence at No.5, Charles Drive, Colombo 03 until February 29 for the public to pay their last respects.
The cortege will be taken to the Ruhunu University at 2 p.m. on February 29.
Ruhuna University Vice Chancellor Senior Professor Sujeeva Amarasena, Deputy Vice Chancellor Prof.Samath Chandana Ediriweera will accept the remains and place the coffin in a hall near the university’s indoor stadium as per his last will.
The former Minister had visited the place where his remains needs to be kept in person in 2018.
President Ranil Wickremesinghe, Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena on behalf of his father Philip Gunawardena and Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa are expected to render euologies at the funeral as per his last will.
His private secretary over 49 year K.H.Wilfred will deliver the vote of thanks at the funeral.Ronald Joseph Godfrey de Mel who was the longest serving Finance Minister in the country under the J.R.Jayawardene government was instrumental in introducing open economy to the country after UNP came into power in 1977.
