The National Chamber of Commerce of Sri Lanka has written to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake seeking his urgent intervention over concerns affecting the country’s rooftop solar energy sector.
In the letter titled “The Threat to Sri Lanka’s Rooftop Solar Energy Sector,” the Chamber has drawn the President’s attention to two critical policy issues which it says could place Sri Lanka’s national energy security and economic recovery at risk.
The Chamber warned that Sri Lanka could face an energy shortfall of up to 450 MWh by the first half of 2027, citing official forecasts, including statements issued by the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) and the National System Operator (NSO).
Against this backdrop, the Chamber has highlighted the rapid expansion of rooftop solar power and battery energy storage systems as a practical solution to help address the anticipated energy shortage.
However, it warned that recently issued policy directives could threaten the survival of the rooftop solar sector at a time when it could play a key role in supporting the national electricity grid.
According to the Chamber, the existing rooftop solar power and battery energy storage sector contributes around 2,600 MW of capacity to the national electricity grid.
It further stated that the sector helps Sri Lanka save approximately Rs. 20.4 billion each month in expenditure on imported fossil fuels.
Despite its contribution to the country’s energy requirements and foreign exchange savings, the Chamber said the sector continues to face several regulatory barriers.
The National Chamber of Commerce has therefore sought President Dissanayake’s intervention to address the policy concerns and safeguard the rooftop solar energy sector, highlighting its importance to Sri Lanka’s energy security and economic recovery. (Newswire)
