Rower Maheshi secures semi-final spot at Asian Games

Sri Lankan rower Maheshi Liyanage made a historic mark at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou by securing a spot in the semifinals of the Women’s Single Sculls event held at the Fuyang Water Sports Centre, Hangzhou in China yesterday.

Competing in a 2000-meter race, Liyanage completed the course in an impressive time of 8 minutes and 53.68 seconds. Her performance outshone her Saudi Arabian opponent, Almamy Haya Muhammed, who finished with a time of 9 minutes and 18.16 seconds. The first place in this leg was secured by China’s Liu Ruiqi, with a remarkable time of 8 minutes and 0.74 seconds, while Kuwait’s Alfaqaan Soaad claimed the second spot with a time of 8 minutes and 45.30 seconds.

However, in other events that took place on the same day, Sri Lankan athletes faced challenges. In the Women’s Double Sculls, Maheshi Liyanage and Jayani Hirunika finished in fifth place. Meanwhile, in the Men’s Single Sculls, Mohamed Nafiran secured the fourth position. In the Men’s Double Sculls, the duo of Nafiran and Nuwan Sampath also finished fourth, failing to advance to the next round.

Maheshi Liyanage’s remarkable performance in the Women’s Single Sculls event has made her the standout athlete for Sri Lanka in the ongoing 19th Asian Games, raising hopes for further achievements in the days ahead.
