Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Presidential Candidate MP Sajith Premadasa has stated that the SJB government will launch a bottom-up programme to alleviate poverty within 2 years, by providing a monthly allowance of Rs 20,000 to families identified as poor.
Addressing a public rally held in Seruwila on Monday (26), he stressed that the new National programme will utilise the strengths of existing initiatives like Janasaviya, Samurdhi, Aswesuma and Gamidiriya.
“Even though people have fallen into poverty due to inefficient government policies and mismanagement, it should not be permanent. The people of our country, who lead strong, independent lives without relying on anyone, should be freed from the bondage of poverty,” he added.
He further stated, “The programme to alleviate poverty, will focus on consumption, investment, savings, production, and export for both food and non-food needs. Millions of people are suffering from poverty in the country due to the inefficient policies of the current government and leaders who have driven the country into bankruptcy.”
“This programme will target people without a clear source of income and who are unable to afford three meals a day. Furthermore, it will particularly benefit women who are responsible for running their households”, he added.
