The foundation stone for a new four‑storey nurses’ quarters complex at the Point Pedro Base Hospital was laid under the patronage of Minister of Health Nalinda Jayatissa, marking a major investment of Rs. 212 million to strengthen health infrastructure in the Northern Province.
The project, funded by the Northern Provincial Council under the government’s programme to expand physical resources for the health service, will provide residential facilities for about 50 nursing staff. Construction is scheduled to be completed by July next year.
Officials said the initiative aims to resolve long‑standing issues caused by inadequate housing for nurses, ensuring proper and secure accommodation near the hospital. This is expected to improve working conditions, enable efficient response during emergencies, and help retain essential human resources close to the hospital for uninterrupted patient care.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Jayatissa described the occasion as the final programme in a four‑day series of projects aimed at delivering a “health renaissance” to the Northern Province. He noted that the series began with the laying of the foundation stone for a Rs. 600 million emergency treatment unit at the Mannar District General Hospital under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, with funding support from the Indian government.
Other projects in the series include a cardiac treatment unit at Trincomalee, a medical wards complex at Mullaitivu, and new residential facilities for health staff at Kilinochchi, Vavuniya, Chavakachcheri, and Tellippalai hospitals. In total, more than Rs. 1,000 million is being invested in health infrastructure development across the province.
The Minister also announced the recruitment of 350 health assistants to strengthen staffing in Northern hospitals, alongside postal service expansions with new post offices in Kayts, Mullaitivu, Mannar, and Puthukudiyiruppu, funded with Rs. 110 million.
Minister Jayatissa emphasized that all these projects are financed by public funds, underscoring the government’s commitment to ensuring a more comfortable, dignified, and quality life for Sri Lanka’s 22 million citizens.
Following the foundation stone ceremony, the Minister inspected the emergency and accident treatment unit at Point Pedro Hospital, reviewed service needs, and held discussions with staff. (Newswire)
