Foundation stones will be laid on Sept. 16 for several new health facilities being constructed in the Northern, North Central and Eastern provinces at a total cost of Rs. 7,148 million under financial assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Government of India.
The foundation-laying ceremonies will be held under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, with Health and Mass Media Minister Nalinda Jayatissa, provincial governors and other dignitaries expected to participate.
The projects include an eight-storey, fully equipped cardiac treatment complex at the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital at a cost of Rs. 3,545 million and another eight-storey cardiac treatment complex at the Trincomalee District General Hospital at a cost of Rs. 2,403 million.
A modern accident and emergency treatment complex will also be constructed at the Mannar District General Hospital at a cost of Rs. 600 million, while a four-storey ward complex will be built at the Mullaitivu District General Hospital at a cost of Rs. 600 million.
The two cardiac treatment complexes in Anuradhapura and Trincomalee will be constructed with loan assistance from JICA and will include facilities such as coronary care and critical care units, catheterisation laboratories, wards, clinics, laboratories, libraries, auditoriums, X-ray facilities and electrocardiogram (ECG) services.
The Mannar complex will include accident and emergency treatment facilities and other modern treatment units, while the new four-storey ward complex at the Mullaitivu District General Hospital is intended to address overcrowding at the hospital.
The Mannar and Mullaitivu projects are being implemented with Indian grant assistance amounting to Rs. 1,200 million.
JICA Sri Lanka Chief Representative Shigeo Honzu, Japanese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Akio Isomata and Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Santosh Jha are also expected to attend the foundation-laying ceremonies.
The projects are expected to enable people living in areas outside Colombo to access specialised treatment for heart disease and emergency medical care in their own areas free of charge. (Newswire)
