The Bandarawela Magistrate’s Court has imposed a Rs.1 million fine on a food outlet in Bandarawela for selling a 500ml bottle of drinking water above the prescribed Maximum Retail Price (MRP).
Legal action was taken after the outlet was found selling a 500ml bottle of bottled drinking water for Rs.100, when the applicable MRP at the time was Rs.70.
The violation was detected during a raid at the food court located on the first floor of the Cargills Building at Bandarawela Hotel, Welimada Road, Bandarawela.
The case was taken up before the Bandarawela Magistrate’s Court on September 23, 2026, when the defendant establishment was fined Rs.1 million.
The Consumer Affairs Authority clarified that the Rs.70 MRP referred to in the case was the price applicable at the time of the raid and is not the current MRP.
Under Extraordinary Gazette No. 2492/29 dated June 10, 2026, the current MRP for a 500ml bottle of bottled drinking water is Rs.80.
The CAA said consumers can report overcharging and other market irregularities through its 1977 hotline during office hours. (Newswire)
