Amidst the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic and various external factors impacting Sri Lanka’s school system, the Ruhuna University Alumni Colombo Association has initiated a transformative Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) project titled ‘Akshara Saksharatha’.
This pilot project, aimed at enhancing essential learning skills among primary grade students, was launched in May 2021 and successfully implemented at Konwewa Siddhartha Vidyalaya, Galenbindunuwa Education Zone in Anuradhapura.
A formal survey conducted prior to the project’s commencement identified 30 students from Grades 2 to 5 who were lacking in grade-specific skills in reading, writing, (literacy) numeracy, and basic mathematics. The project, which lasted for six months, was conducted with the guidance and assistance by the North Central Provincial Council, the Provincial Department of Education, and the National Institute of Education (NIE).
Throughout the programme, students were provided with nutritious meals and essential learning materials. Special supplementary learning sessions were held two days per week after school hours, focusing on engaging students through student-centred outdoor games and various activities, including fun activities. To foster self-motivated learning, two Special Teacher Guide Manuals were prepared by the NIE, and comprehensive training was provided to both teachers and parents.
The effectiveness of the ‘Akshara Saksharatha’ programme was rigorously evaluated through independent assessments during and at the end of the six-month period. Using action research strategies in pedagogy, maintaining reflective journals, and closely monitoring student progress, the evaluations revealed that the skill levels (both knowledge and leadership) of approximately 95 percent of the participating students had significantly improved.
Building on the success of this pilot project, the innovative learning methods and strategies are now being implemented in about 75 schools across the Galenbidunuwewa Educational Zone. The comprehensive final report detailing the observations and outcomes of the programme has been released, highlighting the remarkable progress achieved.
