Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga won the men’s javelin gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, ending the country’s 20-year wait for a gold medal at the event.
Tharanga secured victory with a best throw of 89.75 metres, producing a championship-winning performance against a strong field that included India’s Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra.
The gold medal is Sri Lanka’s first at the Commonwealth Games since weightlifter Chinthana Vidanage topped the podium at the 2006 Melbourne Games.
Tharanga’s triumph also marks Sri Lanka’s fifth Commonwealth Games gold medal in history and ranks among the country’s greatest achievements in international athletics. (Newswire)
