Russia condemn US ‘armed aggression’ against Venezuela

Russia has condemned what it described as an act of armed aggression by the United States against Venezuela, warning that the situation risked further escalation and calling for an urgent diplomatic response through the United Nations.

In a statement, Russian officials said the alleged action was “extremely concerning and deserving of condemnation,” rejecting the justifications put forward by Washington and saying they had no factual basis. Moscow accused the United States of allowing ideological hostility to prevail over pragmatic engagement and efforts to build predictable, trust-based relations.

Russia said it was particularly important under the current circumstances to prevent further escalation and to focus on resolving disputes through dialogue, adding that it stood ready to assist any efforts aimed at a peaceful settlement.

The statement said Latin America must continue to remain a zone of peace, referring to the region’s 2014 declaration, and that Venezuela must be guaranteed the right to determine its own future without what it described as destructive external interference, especially of a military nature.

Russia reaffirmed its solidarity with the Venezuelan people and expressed support for the policies pursued by the Bolivarian leadership to safeguard the country’s national interests and sovereignty. Moscow also said it supported calls by Venezuelan authorities and several Latin American leaders for an urgent meeting of the United Nations Security Council.

The Russian statement followed claims made earlier by former U.S. President Donald Trump that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro had been captured. Trump did not provide details on how Maduro was allegedly detained or where he had been taken. The Venezuelan government has not confirmed the claim, and U.S. authorities have not issued an official statement elaborating on it.

The United States has long accused Maduro of leading an international drug trafficking organisation, allegations he has repeatedly denied. Washington has previously offered a $50 million reward for information leading to his arrest as part of a broader legal and sanctions campaign against the Venezuelan leadership.

Relations between the United States and Venezuela have been tense for years, marked by sweeping U.S. sanctions on Caracas and repeated accusations by Venezuela and its allies of attempts to destabilise the government.

Russia also said its diplomatic mission in the Venezuelan capital remained fully operational. The Russian Embassy in Caracas continues to operate as usual and remains in contact with Venezuelan authorities and Russian nationals, the statement said, adding that there were no reports of injuries among Russian citizens.
