The appointment of Chairmen to the 17 Sectoral Oversight Committees of Parliament was further postponed yesterday as the Party Leaders were unable to come to a final decision on the matter as the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) is firm on its stance that all those chairmen should be appointed from the Opposition.
The SJB has stated that the Party would not support the appointment of the chairmen for these committees unless the party is given the opportunity to appoint all the chairmen from the Opposition MPs.
However, it has been the opinion of the government MPs that the number of chairmanship should be shared between the government and the Opposition similarly.
President Ranil Wickremesinghe recently informed Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardane that the chairmen for the 17 Sectoral Oversight Committees should be appointed with immediate effect.
It was also reported that Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has not agreed to the suggestion by the government to appoint a majority of the chairmen of the committees from the opposition and the rest from representing the government.He had wanted all chairmanships.
