Sajith urges fresh IMF deal to protect public

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has urged the government to take immediate steps to negotiate a fresh agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to protect the wellbeing of the public.

In a post on X, Premadasa noted that Bangladesh is also seeking a more realistic IMF arrangement aimed at reducing the burden on citizens amid prevailing global economic challenges.

He said Sri Lanka should similarly place public welfare at the centre of its economic policy decisions.

“Economic policy cannot become a waiting game where action comes only after shortages return, prices spiral further, and families are pushed to the edge. The responsibility of leadership is to protect people before suffering becomes unbearable,” he said.

Premadasa cautioned against delays in economic policymaking, warning that action should not be taken only after shortages intensify, prices increase further and households face greater hardship.

He added that leadership carries the responsibility of preventing public suffering before it becomes unmanageable, and called on the government to act swiftly while there is still an opportunity to avoid deeper economic difficulties. (Newswire)
