Sakvithi, wife plead guilty, Rs.3.6 Mn fined

English tutor Sakvithi Ranasinghe and his wife admitted and pleaded guilty for the allegations against them for violating the Finance Act, before the Colombo High Court yesterday.

Following that, both accused were ordered to pay a fine of Rs.3,600,000 over the case by the Colombo High Court.

The order was delivered by Colombo High Court Judge Namal Balalle. Considering their plea to the charges, Sakvithi Ranasinghe and his wife were ordered to pay a fine of Rs.900,000 for the first charge and Rs.900,000 for the second charge separately and if they were unable to pay the imposed fines they were sentenced to 24 months rigorous imprisonment for each charge by the Colombo High Court.

Following imposing the fines against them, they sought from the Court to give them a three months period to settle the full amount. Considering the request made by the accused, Colombo High Court Judge fixed the case for February 12, 2024 to settle the fines. The Attorney General had filed a case in 2015 against four accused including Sakvithi Ranasinghe and his wife under two counts including violation of the Finance Act 1978 by running a financial institution named “Sakvithi Construction House Private Limited” during the period November 1, 2006 to September 31, 2008.

The prosecution had listed 11 items as productions while named 151 witnesses as the prosecution witnesses. The third and the fourth accused were released from the case earlier.
