‘Sakwala’ programme will be continued – Tissa Attanayaka

The already stalled ‘Sakwala’ educational programme will be once again continued for the wellbeing of countrywide underprivileged schoolchildren, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB ) Natioinal Organiser Tissa Attanayaka said.

Quoting a survey, Attanayaka said a large number of schoolchildren, especially in the country’s remote and rural sectors, so far, have no access either to the Internet or the Digital Smart Boards (DSB) and Computers.

Responding to a question, Attanayak said, so far, the SJB has provided 377 Smart Classrooms equipped with DSBs and Computers. He said, currently, the SJB has stopped establishing Digital Classrooms in schools, in view of the forthcoming Presidential Election.

“In addition to digital equipment, the SJB has also provided schools with musical instruments for school bands and also sports gear to strengthen the sports activities of children,” he said.

Attanayaka further said the SJB’s next objective is to improve the English Language skills of children, which is immensely important for them to visit the global arena. “To fulfil this objective, the SJB has planned to set up English Language Skill centres in every district and the children will be given free education through these centres,” he said.

He said English Language is immensely needed to find both local and foreign employment opportunities. Attanayaka also said the SJB is carrying out the programme with the support of local and international donors, and they have so far donated millions worth of digital equipment to fulfill this objective.

He further said that, being in the Opposition, the SJB is the only Party that makes such donations to schools as well as medical equipment to hospitals.

Attanayaka also said, in addition, the SJB has so far donated a large number of buses to schools countrywide.
