Salt barrier across Nilwala River to be removed

Matara District Secretary Y. Wickramasiri had a special discussion on the removal of the salt barrier built across the Nilwala River to drain the water quickly when the Nilwala River is overflowing yesterday.

The fact that the salt barrier that has been built is the main reason why the flood caused by the overflowing of the Nilwala River does not recede quickly is a matter of intense discussion and unrest among the public. There was a strong belief among the public that by removing the sheet file of the salt barrier, the water would drain quickly and reduce the flood situation. Representatives of various organizations, including farmers’ organizations, presented facts in this regard and suggested that the salt barrier should be removed.

People living on both sides of the Nilwala river have been suffering for weeks due to the floods that have occurred in the areas from Akuressa to Matara. In particular, the paddy owners presented facts in this regard and said that their paddy fields were completely destroyed as water did not flow due to the salt barrier. Crop damages have also to be paid to the destroyed rice fields.

The Matara District Secretary focused on each of these issues, stating that a short-term technical method for the quick flow of the water collected under the villages of the Nilwala valley through the salt barrier (salt barrier) constructed across the Nilwala valley is to remove 40 feet of sheet file. The relevant departments were informed.

In this discussion, it was decided to begin work immediately after the necessary equipment to remove the sheet file of the salt barrier reaches the relevant place. For this purpose, the Army is supported and the Irrigation Department and the Water Supply Board supervise the work.

Matara Additional District Secretary Kasun Wellaheva, Additional District Secretary (Lands) Nishan Pathirana, the Water Supply Board, Irrigation Department, Disaster Management Coordination Unit, and Army officers participated in this event.
