Tangalle High Court on Friday (11) granted bail to Sampath Manamperi, who had been remanded over allegations of possessing a live hand grenade.
Manamperi, a former police officer and former Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) local council election candidate, was released on a cash bail of Rs. 10,000 and two sureties of Rs. 250,000 each.
The bail application was taken up before Tangalle High Court Judge Pradeep M. Abeyratne.
Manamperi was arrested by the Western Province North Crime Division over the possession of weapons and a stock of chemicals suspected to be used in the manufacture of crystal methamphetamine, commonly known as “ice.”
Police later recovered the live grenade from a house in the Middeniya area following questioning conducted under a detention order obtained from the Walasmulla Magistrate’s Court.
The bail application was filed before the Tangalle High Court in connection with the case pending before the Walasmulla Magistrate’s Court. (Newswire)
