Centralizing the world heritage Sanchi Temple in India, Sanchi Town is being converted as India’s first renewable energy city in Madhya Pradesh, India.

Under the Madhya Pradesh Government’s programme for maximum use of renewable energy, Sanchi City’s renewable energy development project was launched last week (6) as the first city in Madhya Pradesh to run entirely on solar power and other renewable energy sources.

This solar power generation process was officially launched at Sanchi which has been named as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where the both the Buddha and Sariuth Mogalan Relics (Agrasravaka Dhatu) reside in the same place. Accordingly, installation of solar panels on building roofs was started by Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan in Sanchi.

Chief Minister Chouhan said that Sanchi, which is revered throughout the world by giving the message of peace to the world centuries ago, has now given the message of effective use of solar energy to the world.

Environmentalists point out that it would reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 14,000 tonnes, which is equivalent to planting 238,000 trees.

The Chief Minister further said that four commercial charging stations for electric vehicles and three e-rickshaw charging stations have been set up in Sanchi to encourage electric vehicles that reduce environmental pollution.

It has been calculated that more than nine million of diesel cost will be saved per month. The Chief Minister said that through this, there will be a saving of 7.68 million in the annual electricity cost.

A large number of people including Sanchi Chethiyagiri temple Chief Incumbant Ven. Banagala Wimalatissa Thera, temple resident Ven. Udugama Tapassi Thera, and Madhya Pradesh Public Health and Welfare Minister Sri Prabhuram Chowdhury were present.
