Former Sri Lanka captain and Rajasthan Royals head coach Kumar Sangakkara believes teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is ready for international cricket following his outstanding IPL 2026 campaign.
Speaking after Rajasthan Royals’ seven-wicket defeat to the Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 2 on Friday (29), Sangakkara said Sooryavanshi had shown the temperament and skill required to succeed at the highest level.
“I think you never know if anyone’s ready until they play. With everything Vaibhav’s shown against some of the best bowlers in the world, I think he’s more than ready to take on any challenge that you throw at him,” Sangakkara said.
The former Sri Lankan skipper added that he expects the young batter to receive a national team call-up in the near future, praising his maturity and contribution at the top of the order.
Sangakkara also revealed that the Royals have put measures in place to protect the teenager from external pressures, including social media scrutiny, while allowing him to focus on his development.
“He comes to all our team meetings, he contributes, he listens, and he does a lot of homework. He practises well, reads bowlers well and prepares himself thoroughly,” Sangakkara said.
Sooryavanshi finished the IPL 2026 season with 776 runs in 16 matches and currently leads the race for the Orange Cap, although Gujarat Titans batters Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan still have an opportunity to surpass his tally in the final. (Newswire)
