Sapugaskanda Oil Refinery to receive facelift

Moves are under way to facelift the Sapugaskanda Oil Refinery, which is the only oil refinery in the country to meet the energy needs of the country.

Accordingly, Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody discussed with the top management of the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) relating to the modernization plans for the Sapugaskanda Oil Refinery and areas requiring special attention.

Minister Jayakody highlighted the timely and technological improvements needed to the refinery since it has not been renovated for a certain period of time parallel to the technological advancement of the sector.

He made these remarks after inspecting the Sapugaskanda Oil Refinery recently. The Minister, who inspected the future development activities of the Sapugaskanda Oil Refinery, also had a cordial conversation with other employees of the oil refinery and drew attention to their problems and suggestions for their improvement.

The Sapugaskanda Oil Refinery, which was commissioned in 1969 and is spread over an area of 165 acres, supplies 40 percent of the country’s petroleum-related product requirements.

Besides, it also supplies aviation fuel and naphtha to power plants such as Kelanitissa and Sapugaskanda as well.

The event was attended by Chairman of the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation, D.J. Rajakaruna, Managing Director, Dr. Mayura Netthikumarage and the top management of the Sapugaskanda Oil Refinery.
