Savindu Apoorva, champion Athlete from Gatway-Negombo

Fifteen year old grade ten student up and coming champion athlete and member of the champion relay team, gold medalist and bronze medalist at the John Tarbet Meet Nethmira Savindu Apoorva Karunaweera has brought honour and immense glory to his alma mater Gateway International School Negombo with his deeds in the field of athletics.

Apoorva who hails from Horagasmulla, Divlapitiya was admitted to his present school play group class in 2012 and as he showed an interest for athletics his Parents Sarath Kamnaweera and Buddhika Herath handed over their son to the school athletic coach former airman Janaka Perera.

His first attempt was at the school sports meet and he came second in Long Jump and 100 meters. His second meet was Inter Gateway Sports Meet and in the Long Jump event he won a Silver Medal.

Then in the Divisional Sports Meet competing in the under 16 event he won the 200 meters and participated at the District meet. Then at the Sri Lanka Schools Junior Championship in 2020 and 2021 he did not come up to expectations and at the 2022 John Tarbet Meet he won a Bronze Medal for 400 meters.

At the Inter International Meet in 2023 he was the under 16 champion by winning 100, 200 and 400 meter races and at the relay events 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 his team were victorious. At the Sri Lanka Schools Athletic Association Meet 2023 his team were the runner up at the 4 x 200 relay event.

His final attempt was Educational Zonal Meet where he was second in the 200 meter event and due to an injury at the Zonal meet he could not participate at the 2023 John Tarbet Meet.
