The weight of schoolchildren’s bags is expected to be significantly reduced under Sri Lanka’s new education reforms, with a module-based learning system set to be introduced for Grade 6 from 2027, Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya said.
Responding to a question in Parliament on measures being taken to reduce the weight of school bags, the Prime Minister said the activity-based learning process introduced under the reforms would reduce the number of books students need to carry between home and school.
Under the proposed system, books used for classroom activities will be kept at school, meaning students will not have to carry them back and forth each day.
Students will only be required to take the books home at the end of the term after completing their work, she said.
The Prime Minister said a module-based learning process would also be introduced for Grade 6 from 2027.
Instead of large textbooks, students will be provided with modules relevant to each subject for the particular school term.
The changes are expected to significantly reduce the weight of school bags carried by students, the Prime Minister said. (Newswire)
