School premises taboo for political purposes

President’s Cabinet proposal receives approval

Some organising political meetings under guise of donations

Governors told to excercise caution

The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the proposal by President Ranil Wickremesinghe to prohibit the use of school premises for political purposes, Cabinet Spokesman, Transport, Highways and Mass Media Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardhana said. He was speaking at the weekly Cabinet media briefing held yesterday at the Government Information Department.

Accordingly, it has been decided to instruct provincial Governors not to grant permission to use school premises for political purposes during this week’s Cabinet meeting held on Monday under the patronage of President Ranil Wickremesinghe. He said that some people are organizing political meetings under the guise of donating aid to schools and this decision has been taken in consideration of the suggestions made by the parties who love children to prevent this practice.

He said that in the history of this country, various state leaders and politicians never used the school and the school grounds for their own or others’ politics.

The Minister said;“The President presented a proposal to instruct Governors not to allow school premises for political purposes. In the history of our country, various state leaders and politicians never used the school and school grounds for their own or others’ politics. This is not to stop aid and donations given to a school. But those who love children have put forward suggestions that the practice of holding political meetings under the guise of donations should be stopped and children should be allowed to follow their education freely without any hindrance. A resolution was passed to order the governors of the provinces to prohibit School premises being used for political activities. I have served as the Minister of Education and Minister of Higher Education in this country. After that period or during that period, we never used the school, children or teacher organizations to propagate our political opinion or any other political activity. All political leaders before and after us did not use schools for political activities. Therefore, the government considers it as something that should not be done”.
