H.W. P. Samararatne, Principal of Kelaniya Hunupitiya Bandaranaike Vidyalaya, died after sustaining serious injuries in a road accident on November 14, at the Grandpass area of Colombo.
When he was riding a motorcycle with his wife near the fire brigade headquarters on Grandpass Wales Kumara Mawatha, an iron rod that was exposed about four metres out of the iron bars that were loaded for transportation in a lorry belonging to the Colombo Municipal Council pierced through his neck.
Samararatne and his wife were taken to the ICU of the Colombo National Hospital in an ambulance of the fire brigade, but he died before receiving treatment. His wife is undergoing treatment at the hospital. Piyumi Shanika Siriwardena, Deputy Principal of Bandaranaike Vidyalaya, said that the funeral arrangements will be announced later.

She said the Principal’s death was an unbearable loss to all of them. The late principal had done all the organization work to hold the ‘Nupuranada’ Performing Arts Festival, which showcases the talents of schoolchildren, to be held this evening (16) at the Wattala Town Hall, on which date the principal will be going on his final journey.
