The Central Environment Authority (CEA) will conduct a proper garbage disposal programme in Kandy during the Perahera season from August 14 to 20 with the assistance of schoolchildren from 30 schools in the Central Province.
According to the CEA, during the perahera season, people who visit the hill capital to see the Kandy perahera dispose of nearly 30 tonnes of garbage including polythene, plastic sheets and plastic bottles in the city and street cleaners in the Kandy MC and few other social service organisations face immense difficulties to clear the garbage.
Speaking to the Daily News, CEA Director General P.B. Hemantha Jayasinghe said the CEA has already informed school heads to send children to the workshops scheduled to be held from August 14 to 19 to educate children on the programme.
He said the children will thereafter educate the public on how to dispose garbage in a methodical way without harming the environment.
According to the CEA, the participant children are also engaged in several programmes to entertain people who visit Kandy city.
In the meantime, the CEA yesterday made a fervent request to the over one million devotees who visit Kandy during this festival season to refrain from bringing plastic, polythene and similar items which destroy the environment.
The CEA has declared the Kandy city area as a garbage-free city during this period as a large number of people including foreigners are expected to visit Kandy for the perahera.
