Science ‘Maroons’ Under-24 Rugby Team

Western Province Under-24 Rugby Team

Science ‘Maroons’ will face an acid test when they take on the Western Province (WP) in the SLR Under-24 League Rugby Tournament Cup Championship final on Sunday at the Police Park in Bambalapitiya.

Both teams will take the field brimming with confidence having maintained an unbeaten record after finishing on top of the points table in the Club Tournament and Provincial Tournament respectively.

In fact, Science ‘Maroons’ accumulated a staggering 199 points from their three outings, including a massive 115-0 victory over the Field Force SC. The only real challenge for Science ‘Maroons’ came during the match against the Old Wesleyites SC, where they eventually triumphed 22-7 at the Thurstan College Grounds in Colombo.

They completed their preliminary round matches with another convincing 62-7 victory over the Petersons SC, two weeks ago and will be determined to keep the momentum going into the more important final encounter. In contrast, Western Province went through some anxious moments as they struggled to beat the Southern Province 29-13 after having recorded a massive 121-0 win against Uva Province in their opening fixture.

However, Western Province warmed-up for the important final by recording a morale boosting 33-10 victory over the North Western Province Team in their last league match played last week.

Meanwhile, the Old Wesleyites SC (OWSC) will have another chance to impress when they take on the North Western Province in the Plate Championship final at the Maliyadeva College Grounds in Kurunegala on Saturday.

OWSC after having made a poor start to their campaign have made steady progress during the last couple of outings and eventually managed to secure the second spot in the club segment points table. North Western Province, with two wins and one defeat in the tournament will

certainly look to make amends in their final outing under home conditions. In addition, the wooden spoonists in this inaugural tournament, Petersons SC and the Southern Province Team will clash in the Bowl Championship final on Saturday at St. Aloysius’ College Grounds in Galle.
