Cinnamon Gardens Police investigating into the theft of goods worth over Rs.1 million, including two pens containing diamonds, from a house of a businessman in Colombo 7, arrested a couple yesterday. Police began investigations into the theft based on a complaint made by the businessman who is involved in readymade garment industry.
Police said the husband of the couple has been a security guard of a house which is located few yards away from the businessman’s house.Police said that this house owner, who runs a ready-made clothing shop in Negombo, had gone to Puttalam on the March 22 with his wife and son.
While they were staying in Puttalam, a woman from a neighbouring house phoned them on March 25 and informed them that a windowpane on the upper floor of the house had been broken. The businessman had come to Colombo with his wife and at night.During the inspection, he had found that a person had entered the house by opening the gate.They have also observed that the person has opened the doors of the rooms and pulled out almost all the belongings there.
The owner had complained to the police and said that a gold ring worth Rs.450,000, a diamond encrusted pen worth Rs.600,000, a Bratank type diamond pen, two TV sets, an Apple iPad, two belts, several sets of women’s and men’s wedding dresses were stolen.
During the investigation by examining the security camera footage of this theft, it has been found that a suspicious lorry had stopped near this house. Police officers who searched the vehicle based on the numbers of the two vehicles has found that the items stolen from the house were taken and left in the lorry.
