Security of former Presidents, Opposition Leader to be beefed up

Focusing on the current social conditions and the forthcoming Presidential Election, the Cabinet led by President Ranil Wickremesinghe, decided to increase the security of the Opposition Leader and former Presidents, Transport, Highways and Mass Media Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardhana said.

This decision was made at the Cabinet meeting held on Monday (15), paying attention to the shooting incident of the former US President Donald Trump, while addressing an election campaign rally in the state of Pennsylvania, America.

Drawing attention to the incident, Samagi Jana Balawegaya has requested the Speaker to increase the security of Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa.

“MP Eran Wickramaratne also requested the government to increase the security of the Opposition Leader while holding a press conference at the opposition leader’s office recently”.

Minister Gunawardhana said that Cabinet made this decision considering several other matters including the shooting incident in the United States, as the former Presidents are still engaged in active politics and are voicing their opinions on political platforms for the next elections. According to this decision, the security of Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, as well as former Presidents Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, Mahinda Rajapaksa, Maithripala Sirisena and Gotabaya Rajapaksa will be further strengthened.
