The report of the inquiry committee on the increase of interest rates in senior citizens’ fixed deposit bank accounts is scheduled to be submitted to the President next week.
A committee appointed to urgently investigate and prepare a report regarding the increase in the interest rate offered to senior citizen bank accounts met on a number of occasions at the Finance Ministry under the chairmanship of Finance State Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya.
The report containing recommendations of the committee is to be handed over to the President next week, Siyambalapitiya said.
The committee will find out how much the interest rate can be raised according to the current economic situation and give recommendations accordingly.There are about 1.1 million accounts of people over 60 years and the need to regularise them was also emphasised at the discussion. Attention was drawn on the incidents of maintaining several bank accounts by the same person. It was reported that certain persons deposit money of other parties in those accounts also.
Several proposals regarding raising the salaries and allowances of Samurdhi, Grama Niladari officers and executives in the state service were also discussed here.
