Seven cops transferred for framing colleague

Police Headquarters Special Investigations Bureau Director SSP D.S. Wickremasinghe said in open court that he begs forgiveness from the court on behalf of the Inspector General of Police and the Police Department for the injustice done to a police constable attached to the Thanthirimale Police by Anuradhapura Division, Anti-Corruption sector officers, in arresting him while going against the law, and maliciously filing a case against him in Court on charges of possessing, dealing in and transporting 85 grams of cannabis.

SSP D.S. Wickremasinghe stated this when a case before the Medawachchiya Magistrate’s Court against former Police constable J. D. Sandun of the Thanthirimale Police, a resident of Medawachchiya Etaweeragollewa was taken up for hearing before the Medawachchiya Magistrate Priyantha Halyala.

SSP Wickremasinghe on behalf of the IGP Chandana Wickramaratne and the Sri Lanka Police Department, making a special statement before open Court, said that the accused Police constable was arrested by the Anuradhapura Division Anti-Corruption Sector on charges of possession of 85 grams of cannabis, dealing in and transportation, illegally, with the intention of taking revenge and that it had been a planned operation. This was discovered during a special investigation conducted by the Special Investigation Bureau of Police Headquarters on the orders of the IGP that it was planned.

Accordingly, the Director stated that he is seeking forgiveness from the Honourable Court on behalf of the IGP and the Sri Lanka Police Department for the injustice done to the accused Police constable as a result of the actions of the officers, including the OIC of the Anuradhapura Division, Anti-Corruption Sector, by going against the law and arresting the accused Police constable and maliciously filing a case against him before the court.

SSP Wickremasinghe said that the seven Police officers involved, including the OIC of the Anuradhapura Division Anti-Corruption Sector, who arrested the accused Police constable have been transferred from the Anuradhapura Police Division to another Police division and the IGP will soon take steps to suspend their services with immediate effect and that he is withdrawing the case pending before the court against the accused Police constable.
