Seven former Cabinet Ministers in fray should show what they did for country – Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardhana

As seven former Cabinet Ministers are running for the Presidential Election this year, the work they have done for the country should be revealed to the people, Transport, Highways and Mass Media Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardhana said.

Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardhana made these observations while addressing the joint forum of former  Local Government representatives of parties including Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, United National Party, Sri Lanka Freedom Party, and Mahajana Eksath Peramuna in Homagama.

The Minister also said “As a Cabinet Minister under many governments, I have held the responsibility of many ministries. There, is a network of special Economic Centres such as in Meegoda, Nuwara Eliya, Embilipitiya, Veyangoda, Tambuttegama, Welisara, Bokundara, Narahenpita etc., which was established across the country to create a market for the agricultural products of Sri Lanka’s farmers.

By reviving the cooperative business, the concept of Coop City and Mini-Coop City was implemented across the country by writing off the outstanding bank loans of the Co-operatives. A network of Lak Sathosa branches was established across the country to replace Sathosa, which had been completely destroyed.

As the Minister of Education, the stream of technology, including information technology, engineering technology, bio-system technology, science and technology, etc., was introduced to the country, marking a huge turning point in free education. Faculties of Technology were established in the national university system to graduate students from that stream.

A thousand, two-storeyed Mahindodaya technology labs with sixty-two computers were set up across the country and 251 three-storey Mahindodaya Technology Faculties were established across the country. A common teacher development centre for South Asia was established in Meepe area. A proposal was made to convert teacher science colleges into universities. Currently, I have done a great mission quietly through the position of Minister of Highways and Mass Media.

Many more services than that may have been performed by the Cabinet ministerial candidates running for the Presidential Election. As ministers, all those candidates have done many services known and unknown to the people. We are asking for their past performance reports as I think the performance reports of these candidates are extremely important to determine whether they can fulfil future responsibilities by evaluating past performance.”
