Several Opposition MPs who were seated with him to watch the Gangarama Perahera, sought his intervention to postpone the Local Government Elections, Deputy Speaker Ajith Rajapaksha said.
Observing that the majority of MPs, who demonstrate in and outside Parliament demanding an election, is personally not in favour of an election at this moment, the Deputy Speaker said that it is this reality that the President exposed in Parliament recently.
He was speaking to the media after an event at the Malwathu Viharaya in Kandy. While stating that the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) is ready for the election, he, however, pointed out that the economic situation in the country has hindered Government institutions from executing their duties related to the election.
Responding to a question on the confusion related to the Chairmanship of the Public Finance Committee of Parliament, Rajapaksha said that nobody could be appointed to the post forcefully, and that immediate resignation was possible despite who proposed his name. The Deputy Speaker said that every MP has a right to protest in Parliament, but it should be done in line with the Laws and Standing Orders in Parliament.
