Several roads submerged as heavy rain batters Colombo

Heavy rainfall since early morning today (15) has left several roads around Colombo submerged, causing severe disruption to traffic and daily life.

Multiple areas have gone under water, with the Nugegoda–Nawala Road reported to be fully inundated, halting vehicular movement.

The Department of Meteorology has issued a special warning for heavy showers across the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern, and Uva provinces, as well as the Ampara and Batticaloa districts today.

The Met Department states that unstable atmospheric conditions in the lower atmosphere near Sri Lanka have led to cloudy skies in these regions, with intermittent showers and thunderstorms expected. Rainfall exceeding 100 mm is possible in some locations.

Authorities have urged residents in flood‑prone areas to remain vigilant as water levels continue to rise in several low‑lying zones. (Newswire)
