The Department of Meteorology has issued a severe lightning advisory for several parts of Sri Lanka, with red alerts issued for 16 districts and amber alerts for nine districts.
According to the advisory, issued at 11.30 a.m. today (17), thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are likely at several places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-Central, Eastern and Uva provinces, as well as the Mullaitivu District.
The advisory remains in effect until 11.30 p.m. today.
The Met Department warned that temporary, localised strong winds may also occur during thundershowers.
The public has been advised to take necessary precautions to minimise damage caused by lightning, including seeking shelter indoors, avoiding open areas and water bodies, and refraining from using wired telephones and connected electrical appliances during thunderstorms.
People have also been urged to avoid travelling in open vehicles such as bicycles, tractors and boats, and to remain cautious of fallen trees and power lines.
In case of emergencies, the public is advised to contact local disaster management authorities. (Newswire)
