Sri Lanka’s Shamil Wakeel emerged victorious in the Pennant Hills Alto Open PSA Satellite Championship held recently in Pennant Hills, New South Wales, Australia.
Competing in the PSA Men’s Open category, Wakeel, ranked second in Sri Lanka, defeated Australia’s Jack Hudson with a 4-1 scoreline (11-7, 6-11, 11-5, 11-5) to claim the championship.
In the semi-final, Wakeel secured a 4-1 victory over Australia’s Bradely Fullick, with a scoreline of 11-9, 8-11, 11-5, and 11-4, earning him a share of the $1000 prize money in this PSA tournament.
The quarter-final saw Wakeel beating Kijan Sultana 4-1, with a scoreline of 11-9, 11-9, 5-11, and 11-2. An alumnus of DS Senanayake College, Wakeel represented Sri Lanka in the recent Asian Games in the Mixed Doubles event alongside women’s national champion Chanithma Sinaly. Unfortunately, he couldn’t participate in the 15th Sri Lanka Air Force Squash Championship due to his overseas commitments.
Looking ahead, Wakeel, along with Ravindu Laksiri, will be competing in another PSA tournament in Australia next week. Laksiri has already left the country to participate in that tournament.
