Opposition MP Shanakiyan Rasamanickam has welcomed the reported decision to set aside the death sentence imposed on Sri Lankan migrant worker Anojan Sivarasa in Saudi Arabia, stating that efforts will continue until he safely returns to Sri Lanka.
In a statement posted on ‘X’, the MP said the development brings immense relief and renewed hope to Anojan’s family and those who have been working on his behalf.
“I wholeheartedly welcome the positive development in the case of Sivarasa Anojan, following the decision to set aside the death sentence imposed upon him in Saudi Arabia,” Shanakiyan stated.
He attributed the development to the collective efforts of governments, diplomatic representatives, legal professionals, political and religious leaders, civil society organisations and concerned citizens worldwide.
However, the MP stressed that efforts would continue until Anojan is safely repatriated to Sri Lanka following the completion of the necessary legal procedures.
“Our mission will only be complete when Sivarasa Anojan is safely brought back to Sri Lanka, following the completion of all necessary legal procedures and due process, and reunited with his family,” he said.
Shanakiyan also expressed hope that Sri Lankan and Saudi authorities would continue their diplomatic engagement to facilitate Anojan’s return at the earliest possible opportunity.
He further thanked all those who contributed to the efforts, stating that the occasion for celebration would be when Anojan is safely reunited with his family in Sri Lanka. (Newswire)
