Shiranthi Rajapaksa to be taken to Colombo National Eye Hospital on Friday

The Department of Prisons has decided not to transfer former First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa, who is currently in remand custody, to a private hospital in Colombo today (08).

Prisons Media Spokesman and Commissioner of Prisons Senaka Palletanna said Rajapaksa was examined by a specialist doctor at the Prison Hospital today.

Following the examination, the specialist recommended that she be taken to the National Eye Hospital in Colombo tomorrow (09) for further specialist consultation.

Shiranthi Rajapaksa, the wife of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, was arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) on Wednesday (07).

She was subsequently produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court and remanded until October 13.

Her arrest is linked to allegations that Rs. 10 million was obtained from the National Savings Bank (NSB) through the Siriliya Saviya organisation, purportedly to purchase a CT scanner for the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children.

However, investigators allege that the CT scanner was never provided and that the funds were misappropriated.

Rajapaksa is accused of corruption involving the alleged misappropriation of public funds, along with offences under the Public Property Act. (Newswire)
