Shiranthi’s health conditions detailed in court; hospital visit ordered for eye treatment

Several health conditions affecting former First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa were detailed before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court as her lawyers sought bail following her arrest in connection with the Siriliya Saviya investigation.

President’s Counsel Anil Silva, appearing for Rajapaksa, told court that the 73-year-old had been receiving treatment for a heart condition since 2019.

The defence said Rajapaksa had also undergone a brain scan in 2021 and suffers from a condition that could cause sudden dizziness and fainting.

Her lawyers further told court that she has a spinal condition and varicose veins, arguing that her medical conditions make it difficult for her to carry out some activities without assistance.

The defence argued that remanding Rajapaksa could pose a serious risk to her health due to stress and urged the court to consider her medical conditions as exceptional circumstances when deciding on bail.

However, Rajapaksa was ordered to be remanded until October 13.

Following the remand order, President’s Counsel Silva informed court that Rajapaksa was also receiving treatment for an eye condition at Nawaloka Hospital and requested permission for her to be examined by the doctor treating her.

The court subsequently ordered prison authorities to take Rajapaksa to Nawaloka Hospital at 12.30 p.m. on October 8 for the scheduled medical consultation.

Rajapaksa was arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption in connection with its investigation into the Siriliya Saviya account. (Newswire)
