SI interdicted for soliciting money from fraud suspect

The Kelaniya Division Senior Superintendent suspended a Sub-Inspector working in the Special Crime Investigation Department of Kelaniya Division, who is said to have taken Rs.35,000 each several times from a suspect who had bought gold items and given a cheque

worth more than Rs.6.3 mn that had bounced. Police said the money was taken from a person residing near Koholwila Junction, Biyagama Road, Kelaniya. A senior police officer said that the suspect had committed this fraud on June 15 after buying gold items and giving an invalid cheque of Rs. 6,353,156. The SI who is under interdiction, has investigated the complaint.

The suspect’s wife has complained to the senior police officers that this sub-inspector took Rs. 35,000 each from time to time after the suspect was arrested in connection with the cheque fraud.

A senior police officer stated that a formal investigation will be conducted regarding this allegation and if it is found that the sub-inspector is innocent, he will be re-instated.
