A Sub-Inspector working in the expressway traffic division shot himself in the head with his duty firearm yesterday morning (6) at the Peliyagoda Interchange.
The deceased is the sub-inspector Ruwan Kumara (54) who was a resident of Girabawa, Nochchiyagama.
This officer is a father of a daughter and son. Police information also stated that the wife is an officer working at the Agrarian Service Center located in Nochchiyagama.
This SI had been on duty the night before and was scheduled to be off at 6 am. But it has been revealed in the investigation that he had not signed off at 6 in the morning and shot himself at around 6.30.
After hearing the sound of the officer shooting himself, the expressway and police officers were alerted. The officers have taken steps to immediately take the sub-inspector who was shot and lying in a pool of blood to the Colombo National Hospital. A spokesperson of the Colombo National Hospital stated that he was already dead when he was admitted to the hospital.
When asked about this, a police officer working on the expressway said that the mobile phone used by the deceased sub-inspector was also found to be non-functional at that time.
A definite reason for the shooting of the sub-inspector was not revealed until yesterday evening.
