Sri Lankan outbound tourism has seen significant growth and this rise is driven by economic improvements, better infrastructure and expanded visa-free access.
Travel and Tour World (TTW) , a premier B2B digital magazine, says that in 2022, approximately 2.3 million Sri Lankans traveled abroad, a 15% increase from the previous year. In 2020,1.8 million (pre-pandemic peak) travelled overseas while in 2021 this dipped due to the pandemic impact. In 2022 there was a recovery and growth and in 2023 it had surpassed 2.5 million.
Based on data from the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority, the most visited countries by Sri Lankan travelers include, India: (Over 500,000 visitors in 2022, attracted by cultural and historical connections) Maldives: (Received 300,000 Sri Lankans, popular for its beaches and resorts) Thailand: welcomed 250,000 visitors, known for its proximity and affordability) Singapore: (attracted 200,000 visitors for its modern attractions and cleanliness) and Malaysia: (hosted 150,000 travelers, noted for its cultural diversity and shopping).
According to TTW most popular cities visited by Sri Lankan passport holders are: Bangkok, Thailand (hosted 150,000 visitors in 2022, famous for its vibrant culture and nightlife) Singapore (attracted 130,000 travelers for its urban experiences.) Male, (Welcomed 120,000 tourists, known for its idyllic beaches.) Kuala Lumpur, (saw 100,000 visitors, attractive for its shopping and cultural mix.) and Chennai, (hosted 90,000 visitors, noted for its historical significance and commerce.)
According to travel statistics breakdown by destination show that Asia was the biggest draw by Sri Lankan (70% – 1.61 million travelers) followed by Europe (15% – 345,000 travelers)
Preferred airline was SriLankan Airlines which carried about 1.5 million international passengers in 2022, accounting for 65% of the market. Many countries are now adopting Free Visa on arrival and Sri Lankan passport holders can now explore many countries visa-free enhancing travel opportunities and fostering global connections.
