According to the Southern Expressway Traffic Police, nearly 26 vehicles have been damaged in six accidents that occurred near the Dodangoda Interchange of the Southern Expressway within a period of one hour on Sunday night. A senior official said that this was the highest number of accidents reported within an hour after opening the expressway.
Police said that most of the vehicles involved in these accidents were transporting people who had gone to the villages for the Sinhala New Year and were returning to Colombo.
According to Police six accidents had taken place involving 26 vehicles near the Dodangoda area between the 32 and 35 kilometre posts within an hour. No one was injured in the accidents but all the vehicles had sustained damage to the front and rear areas.
A police officer said that all the accidents had occurred due to the failure of the drivers to keep a safe distance between the vehicles.
