The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) organiser of the Nawalapitiya Constituency, Sasanka Sampath Sanjeewa who was arrested on September 21, for assaulting a National People’s Power (NPP) supporter has been granted bail.
The suspect has been granted bail on a surety of Rs. 200,000 by the Nawalapitiya Magistrate Lasanji Rathnayaka having severely warned him after he was produced yesterday (26) before the Court and the Magistrate ordered to reconvene the case on October 28, Police Media Division said.
The Nawalapitiya Police arrested the suspect previously based on a complaint received by the victim employed at the Nawalapitiya District Hospital as a nurse that the suspect had physically assaulted her on September 21. The suspect has also lodged a complaint at the Nawalapitiya Police over an incident in which the complainant nurse has allegedly threatened the suspect and the Magistrate has ordered the Police to conduct an investigation regarding the complaint by the suspect and produce the findings before the Court.
The suspect had been previously arrested over an incident for threatening and assaulting an NPP supporter who had refused to accept a handbill that was distributed by the SJB organiser.
The investigations are carried out by the Nawalapitiya Police headed by the Officer in Charge (OIC) of the Nawalapitiya Police, Chief Police Inspector Harendra Kalugampitiya.
